Independent & Catholic Schools Employee PD Opportunity

Take advantage of a professional or personal development opportunity
that provides university study covered by a HECS scholarship.

The University of Tasmania (UTAS) has recently formed agreements with a number of Tasmanian Independent and Catholic schools to deliver professional development units and courses in a wide range of subject areas. This commitment is a collaboration to prepare and provide ongoing support and learning opportunities for teaching and general staff throughout Tasmania. Your school/college will provide you with details of the agreement, and your eligibility to access this scholarship.

Colleges and schools with a Memorandum of Understanding with UTAS currently in place are:

  • Calvin Christian School
  • Fahan School
  • The Friends' School
  • Guilford Young College
  • Launceston Christian School
  • Launceston Church Grammar
  • Marist Regional College
  • Scotch Oakburn College
  • St Mary's College
  • St Michael's Collegiate
  • St Patrick's College
  • The Hutchins School

How do I qualify for a scholarship?

This opportunity is extended to all teaching and general staff of a school who has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with UTAS, and who:

  • are employed on a continuing basis (full-time and part-time) or who are on a fixed-term contract of 12 months or more; and
  • will continue to be employed by the school while undertaking the HECS scholarship units; and
  • are eligible for a Commonwealth supported place under the HECS-HELP system (this applies to most people – see www.goingtouni.gov.au for eligibility guidelines).

What can I enrol in?

You may choose something that relates closely to your regular employment, or you may wish to undertake something that provides you with learning opportunities in a subject area of personal interest. There are over 100 undergraduate courses and some HECS based postgraduate coursework programs to choose from within each of the University's Faculties and the Australian Maritime College. Click here to browse the Courses on Offer.

Eligible staff will be entitled to a HECS scholarship for study of up to 25% of a full-time University load per annum, throughout 2009, 2010 and 2011. This may be made up of two 12.5% units or one 25% unit each year.

Which courses attract full HECS scholarships?

Staff who opt to undertake any postgraduate course available through the UTAS Faculty of Education will have access to full HECS scholarships (i.e. they can study as many units as appropriate in a year and they will all be HECS-free). An increased range of specialised postgraduate programs for teaching staff are currently under development in other faculties.

The following courses are now available with full HECS scholarships:
