HAP and the TER
An arrangement has been negotiated with the Tasmanian Qualifications Authority (TQA) such that units undertaken in the High Achiever Program are included in the calculation of TE scores.
On successful completion of a university unit under HAP, your result will be assessed for eligibility for inclusion in the calculation of your TER. 12.5% university units are deemed to be the equivalent of half the size of a Level 3 subject. In order to provide for the inclusion of the university units in the calculation of your TER, all Level 3 subjects you have completed have the TE score halved. Each half score is then the equivalent of a university unit. The best 10 half scores (with at least 6 in Year 12) are then selected to determine the TER.
The conversion of University grades and marks to an equivalent TE score is outlined in the table below:
For more information about how your HAP might count towards your TER, see the sample score calculations.

Sample Score Calculations
EXAMPLE 1
Student A studied the following Level 3 subjects in years 11 and 12:
| Subject | Raw TE score |
|---|---|
| Maths Methods | 21.6 |
| Physical Science | 18.2 |
| Psychology | 17.4 |
| Chemistry | 22.0 |
| Physics | 21.4 |
| English | 20.2 |
Student A also participated in the HAP in year 12, and obtained the following marks:
| HAP Subject | Raw TE score | RAW TE equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Calculus and Applications 1A | 78% | 20 |
| Calculus and Applications 1B | 82% | 22 |
Score Calculation
University units are considered to be equivalent to half a Level 3 subject. Therefore to calculate a raw TE score all units need to be divided in half.
| TCE subject | Raw TE score | Halved scores |
|---|---|---|
| Maths Methods | 21.6 | 10.8 + 10.8 |
| Physical Science | 18.2 | 9.1 + 9.1 |
| Psychology | 17.4 | 8.7 + 8.7 |
| Chemistry | 22.0 | 11.0 + 11.0 |
| Physics | 21.4 | 10.7 + 10.7 |
| English | 20.2 | 10.1 + 10.1 |
Usually, the raw TE score is calculated using a student's best five results. Because scores have been halved, the best 10 results are taken:
Maths Methods, Chemistry, Physics, English and the HAP units count towards the final raw TE score:
RAW TE Score = 10.8 + 10.8 + 11.0 + 11.0 + 10.7 + 10.7 + 10.1 + 10.1 + 10 + 11 = 106.2
EXAMPLE 2
Due to Level 3 subjects being halved, it is possible that one half of a subject will count towards a raw TE score but not the other half, as shown below:
Student B studied the following Level 3 subjects in years 11 and 12:
| TCE subject | Raw TE score | Halved scores |
|---|---|---|
| English | 19.4 | 9.7 + 9.7 |
| French | 21.4 | 10.7 + 10.7 |
| Maths Applied | 18.2 | 9.1 + 9.1 |
| Art Production | 17.8 | 8.9 + 8.9 |
| Religion | 23.0 | 11.5 + 11.5 |
| Psychology | 21.2 | 10.6 + 10.6 |
| Environmental Science | 20.4 | 10.2 + 10.2 |
| Economics | 19.8 | 9.9 + 9.9 |
Student B also participated in the HAP in year 12, and obtained the following marks:
| HAP Subject | Raw TE score | RAW TE equivalent | Halved score |
|---|---|---|---|
| French 2A | 74% | 18 | 9 |
| French 2B | 80% | 21 | 10.5 |
Score Calculation
The best 10 results are taken:
French, Religion, Psychology, Environmental Science, Economics (half) and French 2B:
Raw TE Score = 10.7 + 10.7 + 11.5 + 11.5 + 10.6 + 10.6 + 10.2 + 10.2 + 9.9 + 10.5 = 106.4
