This course is designed to produce graduates who meet the professional requirements for registration with the Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as exercise physiologists or sport scientists. Exercise and sport scientists provide assessment, monitoring and program prescription for fitness and exercise in a diverse range of populations from the chronically ill to elite athletes.

In Years 3 and 4 students undertake practicums within a relevant professional setting.

Special Requirements

Minimum University requirements, including Physical Sciences TQA3 (PSC315109) (or equivalent), plus one other science subject from:Health Studies TQA3 (HLT315108), Sports Science TQA3(SPT315108), Mathematics Applied TQC3 (MTA315109), Mathematics Methods TQA3 (MTM315109), Mathematics Specialised TQA3 (MTS315109), Biology TQA3 (BIO315109), Chemistry TQA3 (CHM315109), or Physics TQA3 (PHY315109), or equivalent.

Career opportunities

Graduates will be able apply for membership to Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) They can then apply for accreditation with ESSA as an exercise physiologist, and may be employed in hospitals, gymnasiums, and private practice as Exercise Physiologists. Graduates can also work as sport scientists with professional teams as well as State and National Sporting Academies and Institutes. They may be employable as cardiac technicians in hospitals and surgeries.

Graduates may also be able to pursue research in Exercise Science or to apply for post-graduate study in areas such as physiotherapy or rehabilitation.
