Bachelor of Laws (63A)

1 + 3 years for straight Law degree, 1 + 4 years for combined Law degrees

Study Areas

This course is the basic academic preparation for persons who wish to enter the legal profession and other careers involving legal work. A degree in law is the first step towards entering the legal profession. After graduating from the University, a law student wishing to practise in Tasmania is required to undertake a 6 month Legal Practice course. Students develop the values and intellectual abilities necessary to marshal facts and to critically assess and evaluate information, theories and doctrines thus preparing themselves for a variety of career roles. Areas of study include:
  • Family law
  • Antarctic law
  • Environmental law
  • Criminal law
  • Corporate law
  • International law

Special Requirements

There are three pathways into the Bachelor of Laws:
1. General entry. Completion of first year in another faculty which includes the units LAW121 Introduction to Law and LAW122 Legal Systems. Having successfully completed this year of study students can apply to transfer to the Law degree.
2. Direct entry into a combined Law degree. A limited number of places are available to for Year 12 leavers who attain a minimum TER of 92. Students apply for the relevant degree with Introduction to Law and if they achieve the minimum TER
may be granted direct entry into their chosen combined Law degree.
3. Graduate entry. Completed bachelor degree, then 3 years further study in Bachelor of Laws.
