Course Costs

 

There are a number of costs associated with attending University. A summary of these costs for domestic students commencing study in 2009 is provided below (all costs are approximate):

Text books and stationery $300 - $800
Accommodation $11,000 - $13,500
Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS-HELP) $4,162 - $8,677

HECS fees are charged at different rates depending on your selection of subjects. For more information, ring the Australian Taxation Office HECS enquiries number 132 861 or visit the Going to Uni website. As a guide, the four different levels of HECS (for domestic students) are indicated below:

*Notes:
  1. These costs are discounted for up-front payment, but most students defer HECS liabilities until they commence earning a salary.

  2. Pre-2009 students: For pre-2009 students, the maximum student contribution amount that may be charged for mathematics, statistics and science units is $7,412.

  3. The national priority maximum student contribution amount will also apply to continuing students who transfer to a Natural and Physical Sciences course of study from a non Natural and Physical Sciences course of study. Other continuing students are subject to the higher maximum contribution amount of $7,412.

  4. Mathematics, statistics and science units of study are those units of study in the Natural and Physical Sciences Field of Education that are classified in Chapter 9 of the Commonwealth Grant Scheme (CGS) Guidelines as being in Funding Cluster 3 or 6. The Guidelines will be amended to reflect these units.

  5. A Natural and Physical Sciences course of study means a course of study in the field of natural and physical sciences, classified as Broad Field 01 in the publication Australian Standard Classification of Education (ASCED) 2001.

Financial Assistance

Youth Allowance (for people aged between 16 and 24 years), Austudy (for people 25 years or more) and Abstudy are federal government schemes, which provide financial assistance to eligible students. Information booklets and application forms for these schemes are available from:
