Choosing your Degree

Choosing which UTAS degree is right for you can sometimes be overwhelming.  Here are some simple guidelines for helping to make your decision.

Plotting your Course
Choosing the right course and the right major areas of study for you can be informed by:

  • examination of your interests and different options, and
  • getting help from others.

For more information and assistance with career decisions,
go to: My Future , an Australian online career service.

Examination of your interests & different options
Pursue areas of interest and do some research and networking to explore the employment trends around your interests.

Websites like: Career One can provide you with details of current jobs
available in your area of interest and chosen location,
including what qualifications and skills employers are seeking.

Research shows that students who choose courses that they are interested in and have some relevance to their future career direction are more likely to be successful in their studies. Employers are interested in your ability to learn as much as the knowledge you have gained.

Getting help from others
Here are some great resources to help the decision-making process:

  • if you are still at school, use your school careers service;
  • look up “Career Counselling” in the Yellow Pages to make an appointment with a qualified Careers Advisor;
  • talk to people already working in your career of interest;
  • gain work experience in your area of interest;
  • have some Course Information emailed or mailed to you;
  • attend one of the annual Uni Info Days (held at all three UTAS campuses) in August; or
  • discuss your course options at UTAS with a Student Recruitment Officer on 1300 363 864.
